Tropic of Capricorn
Brazilian based Kika Nicolela rented a hotel room in Sao Paulo and invited
four transvestites off the street to lay on the bed
and talk about their lives.
Tropic of Capricorn is an intimate look into the lives of four different
people who share a common link.
Simone Stoll
Bride
Bride treats fragility of mind, of one’s existence; an existence that is built in layers.
This piece is like a performance in front of the fixed camera, a calm and silent video showing
a woman sitting on a chair in front of a curtained window.
She moves little, which puts the focus on her respiration and the gentle move of the curtains.
This gentle breeze hints at the possible outside world, outside of the mental and physical
existence of this one individual. Water dribbles down her throat and hair, reminding us of tears.
This water wets the material of the white lacy ‘dress’. With time the material saturates with water
and becomes fragile, prone to tear, transparent and finally reveals skin. As the dress disintegrates
increasingly, the woman gets up and dances slowly in front of the close camera lens.
It is a dance of solitude, absurd as a dream, sweet and crazy.
